Stypendium Erasmus trwa\u0142o w moim przypadku 3 miesi\u0105ce, tj. jeden semestr akademicki. Zjednoczone Kr\u00f3lestwo z dniem 1 lutego 2020r. przesta\u0142o by\u0107 cz\u0142onkiem Unii Europejskiej, w zwi\u0105zku z czym potrzebna jest studencka wiza, gdy kto\u015b chcia\u0142by tam studiowa\u0107 przez wi\u0119cej ni\u017c jeden semestr. I tu moja pierwsza rada: Przed Erasmusem w Zjednoczonym Kr\u00f3lestwie wyst\u0105p o wydanie studenckiej wizy. Pozwoli Ci ona na legalny pobyt w Zjednoczonym Kr\u00f3lestwie nawet do dw\u00f3ch semestr\u00f3w, a tak\u017ce na podj\u0119cie pracy dorywczej.<\/strong> 18 wrze\u015bnia 2022r. by\u0142 moim pierwszym dniem stypendium Erasmus. Towarzyszy\u0142a mi przede wszystkim ciekawo\u015b\u0107, gdy\u017c by\u0142 to m\u00f3j pierwszy pobyt w Irlandii P\u00f3\u0142nocnej, kt\u00f3r\u0105 zna\u0142em jedynie z ksi\u0105\u017cek, film\u00f3w i opowie\u015bci moich angielskich przyjaci\u00f3\u0142. Transport w Belfa\u015bcie i jego okolicach jest naprawd\u0119 dobrze rozwini\u0119ty i komfortowy. Na kampusie mieszka\u0142em w pokoju jednoosobowym z \u0142azienk\u0105. Nie by\u0142o niestety sto\u0142\u00f3wki, ale wystarczy\u0142o tylko chcie\u0107 i mo\u017cna by\u0142o wyczarowa\u0107 mn\u00f3stwo pysznych da\u0144. W mojej okolicy nie brakowa\u0142o r\u00f3wnie\u017c miejsc, gdzie mo\u017cna by\u0142o kupi\u0107, np. jedzenie na wynos. Mieszka\u0142em w mieszkaniu razem z innymi studentami mi\u0119dzynarodowymi, co uczyni\u0142o mojego Erasmusa jeszcze bardziej r\u00f3\u017cnorodnym. Na terenie kampusu by\u0142 sklep spo\u017cywczy, pralnia, si\u0142ownia, bankomat, \u015bwietlica, wi\u0119c wszystko czego student potrzebuje. Moja trzecia rada: zaoszcz\u0119d\u017a przed wyjazdem troch\u0119 pieni\u0119dzy. Grant jaki dostaniesz powinien wystarczy\u0107 na bie\u017c\u0105ce wydatki, ale nie zaszkodzi mie\u0107 wi\u0119cej pieni\u0119dzy przy sobie.<\/strong>  Dotyczy to w szczeg\u00f3lno\u015bci kraj\u00f3w z grupy A, takich jak Irlandia P\u00f3\u0142nocna. Nie ukrywam, \u017ce koszty \u017cycia s\u0105 wy\u017csze ni\u017c w Polsce, wi\u0119c by unikn\u0105\u0107 niepotrzebnego stresu i braku pieni\u0119dzy miej ze sob\u0105 wi\u0119cej oszcz\u0119dno\u015bci. S\u0105 te\u017c inne opcje zakwaterowania ni\u017c kampus studencki, np. pok\u00f3j w domu dzielonym przez innych student\u00f3w. Takie opcje jednak bywaj\u0105 ryzykowne, gdy\u017c jest sporo scamu na Internecie i pok\u00f3j, kt\u00f3ry ogl\u0105dasz przez Internet mo\u017ce w rzeczywisto\u015bci nie istnie\u0107. Najbezpieczniejsza opcja moim zdaniem to zakwaterowanie na kampusie studenckim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bardzo ciep\u0142o nas przywitano co przyczyni\u0142o si\u0119 do szybszego zaaklimatyzowania si\u0119. Naszym opiekunem Erasmusowym w Belfa\u015bcie by\u0142 dr. Pisanie esej\u00f3w i studiowanie nad ksi\u0105\u017ckami w bibliotece okaza\u0142o si\u0119 niezwykle owocne i znacznie poszerzy\u0142o moje horyzonty my\u015blowe. Jestem zadowolony z post\u0119pu jaki zrobi\u0142em w j\u0119zyku angielskim. Gdy musisz ka\u017cdego dnia komunikowa\u0107 si\u0119 w tym j\u0119zyku to staje si\u0119 on po jakim\u015b czasie czym\u015b naturalnym dla ciebie. Warunek jest jeden: Otworzysz si\u0119 i prze\u0142amiesz strach przed m\u00f3wieniem.<\/strong> Zobaczysz po jakim\u015b czasie, jaki zrobisz post\u0119p. Podczas mojego pobytu w Irlandii P\u00f3\u0142nocnej poza studiowaniem, czyta\u0142em te\u017c sporo ksi\u0105\u017cek, gazet, czasopism w j\u0119zyku angielskim. Stara\u0142em si\u0119 otacza\u0107 w jak najwi\u0119kszym stopniu j\u0119zykiem angielskim. Fachowo nazywa si\u0119 to immersj\u0105 j\u0119zykow\u0105. S\u0105 zwolennicy i oponenci immersji j\u0119zykowej, osobi\u015bcie uwa\u017cam, \u017ce jest ona skuteczna, gdy jeste\u015b ju\u017c na do\u015b\u0107 dobrym poziomie j\u0119zykowym. Na ni\u017cszych poziomach j\u0119zykowych, mo\u017ce odstrasza\u0107 i zniech\u0119ca\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warto doda\u0107, \u017ce angielszczyzna jak\u0105 pos\u0142uguj\u0105 si\u0119 p\u00f3\u0142nocni Irlandczycy posiada sw\u00f3j w\u0142asny akcent. B\u0119dziesz prawdopodobnie potrzebowa\u0107 troch\u0119 czasu, zanim zaczniesz rozumie\u0107 ludzi stamt\u0105d, ale to jest w\u0142a\u015bnie pi\u0119kno i r\u00f3\u017cnorodno\u015b\u0107 j\u0119zyka angielskiego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erasmus w Belfa\u015bcie nie tylko by\u0142 studiowaniem na uczelni i pisaniem esej\u00f3w. Zabierano nas r\u00f3wnie\u017c w wiele interesuj\u0105cych miejsc, r\u00f3wnie\u017c takich kt\u00f3rych zwyk\u0142y Kowalski<\/em> nie m\u00f3g\u0142by normalnie zwiedzi\u0107. Najbardziej spodoba\u0142a mi si\u0119 Grobla Olbrzyma (Giant\u2019s Causeway) i XVIII-wieczny Castle Ward zbudowany w palladia\u0144skim stylu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

W ramach programu Erasmus, w po\u0142owie sierpnia tego roku rozpoczn\u0119 nauk\u0119 na East Carolina University w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki, gdzie b\u0119d\u0119 finalizowa\u0107 sw\u00f3j licencjat. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na koniec chcia\u0142bym pozdrowi\u0107 wszystkich student\u00f3w Pa\u0144stwowej Akademii Nauk Stosowanych w Kro\u015bnie oraz Wyk\u0142adowc\u00f3w, u kt\u00f3rych mia\u0142em dotychczas przyjemno\u015b\u0107 pobiera\u0107 nauk\u0119. My name is Jakub Mercik. I study at the second year of Double language studies (English-German) at the State Academy of Applied Sciences in Krosno. I am a polyglot, a Krosno-born student, a traveller, I love everything related to English-speaking countries, gardening and personal development books. I decided to write this article to share my experience of an Erasmus study abroad scholarship in the UK, but also to encourage students at my university (and beyond) to take part in the Erasmus programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Northern Ireland (also called Ulster) is a constituent country of the United Kingdom (along with England, Scotland and Wales). It is an extremely interesting, beautiful, diverse country, ethnically and religiously divided and full of contrasts. No country can escape its past. A particular flashpoint in Northern Ireland\u2019s history was the bloody ethno-political conflict between 1968 and 1998 known as The Troubles<\/em>. Northern Ireland contains both Irish and British influences. Its capital, Belfast, is divided into British and Irish districts. This is directly related to the religion with which the people of Northern Ireland identify. The Irish are traditionally Catholic, while the British are Protestant. Today, Northern Ireland is still haunted by the demons of the past, but the situation seems to be under control and the country is now very safe, economically well-developed, and with over 2 million tourists visiting Northern Ireland every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main reason I chose Belfast for my Erasmus was because it was the only English-speaking country I could go to. I believe that the most benefit of learning English is to go to a country where the language is spoken on a daily basis. It was only possible to go on Erasmus from the second year onwards, so I had to be patient. Even before I started my studies, I looked at the website of the International Cooperation Office and when I saw that a trip to Belfast was possible, I knew from the beginning that this is where I would go. And so I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 18 September 2022, I flew from Cracow to Belfast. The UK has a three-semester system. In my case, the Erasmus scholarship lasted for 3 months, i.e. one academic semester. The United Kingdom is no longer a member of the European Union as of 1 February 2020, so you need a student visa if you want to study for more than one semester there. And here\u2019s my first piece of advice: apply for a student visa before Erasmus in the United Kingdom. It will allow you to stay legally in the United Kingdom for up to two semesters, as well as take up part-time job.<\/strong> 18 September 2022 was my first day of the Erasmus scholarship. I was mainly accompanied by curiosity, as it was my first stay in Northern Ireland, which I only knew from books, films and stories from my English friends. I flew there with the idea that I would judge the country and its people for myself after three months. I believe that excessive reliance on stereotypes and other people\u2019s opinions results in a distorted reality. And here\u2019s my second piece of advice: don\u2019t rely on stereotypes. Base it on your own experiences and your own judgement. Stereotypes are hurtful and often exaggerated or even untrue. Do not attach too much importance to them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the way to St Mary\u2019s<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I lived in the British quarter of the city of Newtownabbey, on the Dalriada Student Village campus, 45 minutes by bus from Belfast city centre. Fact, the distance to the city can be intimidating but the proximity to the sea, peace, tranquillity and plenty of green spaces compensated for the commute time to the city. The famous double-deckers ran from campus to Belfast; it was also possible to get from there to Belfast by train. Transport in and around Belfast is really well developed and comfortable. On campus I lived in a single room with a bathroom. We had a shared kitchen for this. There was no canteen, unfortunately, but you only had to want to and you could conjure up lots of delicious meals. There was also no shortage of places to buy, such as takeaway food, in my neighbourhood. I lived in a flat with other international students, which made my Erasmus even more diverse. There was a grocery shop, laundry, gym, ATM, common room, so everything a student needs on campus. My third piece of advice: save some money before you go. The grant you get should be enough for your current expenses, but it doesn\u2019t hurt to have more money with you.<\/strong>  This is especially true in Group A countries such as Northern Ireland. I make no secret of the fact that the cost of living is higher than in Poland, so to avoid unnecessary stress and lack of money have more savings with you. There are also accommodation options other than a student campus, such as a room in a house shared by other students. If you study at St Mary\u2019s you are de facto<\/em> studying at Queen\u2019s Univeristy \u2013 one of Northern Ireland\u2019s most prestigious university.<\/strong> St Mary\u2019s is an institution that has specialised in training future teachers for over 100 years. The quality of the education is of a very high standard, the lecturers are understanding and helpful, and the collections of the St Mary\u2019s and Queen\u2019s University libraries allow you to research in depth the subjects that interest you. And here\u2019s my next piece of advice: check the International Cooperation Office website to see which partner university you can go to from your course. St Mary\u2019s only accepts language and pedagogy Erasmus students.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first days at the new university were a bit stressful, I make no secret of it. I had to adapt in a new environment, switch completely to English, undergo training, get to know the academic staff, and other Erasmus students (there were about 20 of us). We were given a very warm welcome which helped to acclimatise faster. Our Erasmus tutor in Belfast was Dr Gerard McCann, who made the Erasmus exchange an amazing experience. What I liked best was the emphasis on self-study. Perhaps this is because I am an individualist. Writing essays and studying over books in the library proved extremely fruitful and broadened my mental horizons considerably. I am pleased with the progress I have made in English. When you have to communicate in this language every day it becomes something natural for you after a while. The condition is one: you open up and overcome your fear of speaking.<\/strong> You will see after a while how much progress you will make. During my stay in Northern Ireland, apart from studying, I also read a lot of books, newspapers, magazines in English. I tried to surround myself as much as possible with the English language. Professionally, this is called language immersion. There are proponents and opponents of language immersion, personally I think it is effective when you are already at a fairly good language level. At lower language levels, it can be daunting and discouraging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is worth adding that the English spoken by the Northern Irish has its own accent. You\u2019ll probably need some time before you start to understand people from there, but that\u2019s the beauty and diversity of the English language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erasmus in Belfast was not just about studying at university and writing essays. We were also taken to a lot of interesting places, including some that the Average Joe<\/em> wouldn\u2019t normally be able to visit. The ones I enjoyed the most were the Giant\u2019s Causeway and the 18th century Castle Ward built in a Palladian style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

20 December 2022 was my last day of my Erasmus scholarship abroad. It was a bit of a shame to leave the northern part of the Emerald Isle. I returned to Poland with a baggage of new experiences, knowledge and with new friendships. I wholeheartedly encourage all students to take part in the Erasmus programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, I don\u2019t intend to stop at one scholarship abroad. My next Erasmus is already in the pipeline. As part of the Erasmus programme, in mid-August this year I will start my studies at East Carolina University in the United States of America, where I will be finalising my bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
